אל רבי מנחם מנדל שניאורסון, האדמו"ר השביעי בשושלת אדמו"רי חסידות חב"ד, ניגש יהודי וביקש מהרבי ברכה לרפואה שלמה עבור אשתו.
הרבי בירך את האישה כמבוקש, והוסיף לבעל את העצה הבאה: "במקרים רבים דומים לזוגתו - הוספה בשימת לב הבעל לאשתו מוסיפה בבריאות וכו', וכמובן – הוספה שתרגיש בזה".
קשה לתאר במילים את עוצמת השפעתו של הרבי מלובביץ' על העם היהודי בעשרות השנים האחרונות. הוא פיתח והעצים את מפעל השלוחים ובתי חב"ד במקומות רבים בעולם ושלוחיו הקימו אלפי מוסדות חינוך וארגונים תחת פיקוחו. משנתו התפרסמה בחייו ולאחר פטירתו בספרים רבים. כן קרא הרבי לחסידיו להשפיע בכל מקום אפשרי, גם על יהודים רחוקים מהיהדות, לקיים את המצוות וללמוד תורה, בין היתר על ידי יציאה למקומות ציבוריים וזיכוי הציבור במצוות אלו. כמו כן קרא לעזור כספית למי שאין בידם יכולת כלכלית לקנות את תשמישי המצוות. הרבי הרבה להדגיש את החשיבות הגדולה שבקיום מצוות מעשיות, אפילו באופן חד פעמי, ואף כשהמצווה נעשית ללא הבנת משמעות המצווה.
מרבית המשאבים של השלוחים מופנים לקירוב יהודים רבים ככל האפשר למסורת היהודית, לתורה ולמצוות. הם הביאו לחזרה בתשובה של יהודים רבים, במדינת ישראל ומחוצה לה, בעיקר החל משנות ה-60. השלוחים עוזרים ליהודים גם בתחומים שאינם קשורים לדת, בהתאם להשקפה החב"דית שעזרה גשמית חשובה לא פחות מעזרה רוחנית ליהודי. כך למשל נפוצים בתי חב"ד המפעילים בתי תמחוי ומפעלי חסד אחרים עבור נזקקים. בתי חב"ד באזורי תיירות מהווים במקרים רבים מעין שגרירות יהודית המסייעת גם במקרי חירום.
